After securing $1.5 million in funding earlier this month, Chicago-based education startup ThinkCERCA says that Chuck Templeton, founder of OpenTable and the Impact Engine Accelerator, will be joining its board.
Templeton, an experienced entrepreneur and advisor having served on more than 30 boards including Cleversafe, Braintree, and GrubHub, will play an essential role in guiding ThinkCERCA through the next critical phase of growth as the company partners with investors and others to reach more students, teachers, and administrators.
ThinkCERCA was founded in 2012. The company makes proprietary software that teaches grades 4 to 12 students critical thinking and analytical skills.
The business, which was awarded $250,000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Literacy Courseware Challenge last July, saw rapid growth over the last twelve months. Their product has been sold to 110 schools in 11 U.S. states, reaching more than 20,000 students. A free version, which has limited content and was launched last December, is currently used by teachers in 46 states. The company says it is on pace to quadruple its 2013 revenue this year.
“The key to building a great business in education is a product that teachers want, customers showing that they value it by paying for it, a big market, and an awesome entrepreneur who really focuses on making educational impact,” said Templeton. “That impact is why I believe ThinkCERCA will grow quickly.”
“The amazing success of OpenTable may well become Chuck’s most salient claim to fame, but his success as an investor and director in early stage companies cannot be overstated,” said Eileen Murphy Buckley, ThinkCERCA’s founder and CEO.
“Education needs this talent. Every success we have as an impact business brings rich resources to every student, teacher, and principal we serve. That is why we need to grow our business quickly and Chuck’s world-class entrepreneurial skills will help us do that.”
