“I have news for you,” explains Tom Mboya of Inuka Kenya Trust, “there is no Superman (it’s up to us).” Superman may not be able to save us from the world’s most pressing problems, but Clark Kent isn’t the only hidden hero there is. In attempt to find the individuals positively impacting their communities and to encourage social entrepreneurship, the Surya Nepal Asha Social Entrepreneurship Award 2012 begins the call for applications and nominations today.
The Award, which is sponsored by Surya Nepal and organized by ChangeFusion Nepal, is back for a second year following its success in 2011.
Out of 66 applicants, 5 social entrepreneurs were selected for the Surya Nepal Asha Social Entrepreneurship Award 2011. Ideas ranged from income generation projects to providing a one-stop resource centre for communities. The winners received a cash prize of NPR 100,000 (USD 1,100) for their ventures.
Last year’s award ceremony was part of a three-day program. The first two days included a bazaar where social entrepreneurs could showcase their ideas and seminars for entrepreneurs to share their experiences and discuss real challenges.
“This year again, we announce the call for nominations/proposal, for the first ever award to recognize the Nepalese social entrepreneurs who create value for people, planet and profit. We will bring those hidden heroes out to the public, award the best ventures and give all of our applicants the opportunity to join our network and promote their products or services,” organizers stated, adding that “the Award will not just be a ceremony but a learning experience aimed at encouraging people to become ‘job creators’ instead of ‘job seekers’.”
